STAFF PROFILES

Diversity-a simple definition is 'points
of difference'. What is known is that
perceptions of differences as humans
can cause variations in patient
outcomes, and the UNC Hospitals
Diversity Council strives to reduce
these variations through education and
increasing awareness. Recently the
council sought to educate colleagues
on how poverty, mental illness, and
body image impact patient outcomes in
order to help ensure that every patient
receives the full benefit of all health
care resources. This work comes with
challenges but improved care and
outcomes for everyone are what nursing
continually strives to accomplish.
