Coordinator's faces completely lit up and she said,
" Wow, we really are appreciated ... just wow! "
The excitement and appreciation for these first
gifts only added fuel to our committee's desire to
spread more kindness to other units. We made it
our goal that we would spread Random Acts of
Kindness baskets to as many units as possible.
At the time of this writing, we have delivered 27
baskets to 27 units since starting this endeavor,
and are planning more.
The responses we received demonstrate the
power of a Random Act of Kindness. Kindness
goes a long way and the nursing staff at UNC
Hospitals prove this every day. We are truly One
Great Team, and together we will get through this!

'Random Acts of Kindness' (RAOK) throughout the
hospital. This initially seemed daunting when we
considered the many departments and hundreds
of nursing staff employed here. We formed a
RAOK subcommittee, led by Sonya Lester, BSN,
RN, CCRN, Clinical Nurse IV, and set our focus on
those units that provided direct care to COVID
patients. Each subcommittee member reached
out to their respective departments (Neurosurgery
ICU, Nurse Employment, the Rehabilitation Center,
6 Women's, and 6 East) for donations. These
departments and others made many generous
donations including baskets full of items like
snacks, coffees, lotions, and picture frames for the
Retention Committee to deliver to these units.
The response from staff was very emotional.
They loved the baskets, but when they learned
they were from their fellow nursing staff it really
made it even more special. One ICU RN said, " I
feel good to know my peers in other units, who
are just as busy as I, still found time to share a
treat, thank you, or even just a smile. This show
of thanks lets me know we are in this together.
Our struggles and stresses are shared; we have
friends throughout this hospital that care about
our mental well-being and us. A 'thanks' coming
from your peers hits your spirit a little differently
and is a little more special. " One of the Health Unit
