and patients of Spanish Labor Channel 206 and
English Labor Channel 208.
They notified all Labor & Delivery staff about
the go-live date and received positive feedback
from nurses, physicians, and patients that utilized
the resource. Three months after 'go live' they
surveyed staff.
Of those that responded:
80% said they used it occasionally to always.
90% said it helped them to explain the positions
to the patient.
90% felt that it helped to break down language
barriers with Spanish-speaking patients.

patient room. However, the COVID-19 pandemic
presented challenges with how to distribute this
information safely. Protecting patients during the
pandemic meant heightened cleaning practices
for housekeeping staff, and the Orientation
Committee did not want to add more to their
workload. After brainstorming with their nurse
colleagues, the Committee decided to explore
creating an in-house Labor TV channel. Kara
Robinson, BSN, RN, led the initiate and discussed
the idea with Patricia Dodson, MSN, RNC-NIC,
NPD-BC, chairperson of the Patient Education
Committee, and Amy Mora from TIGR TV, the
narrowcast provider for UNC Hospitals, where
she received encouragement and approval
to proceed.
Danielle Anspach, DNP, RN, CNM, EFM-C,
Women's Hospital Clinical Nurse Educator, and
Kara photographed Labor & Delivery nursing staff,
ancillary staff, and nurse manager Betsy Driggers,
MSN, RN, CCRN, acting as patients and support
persons. They also wrote brief narratives of the
photographs describing how to get into each
position properly. The images were organized
and numbered, beginning with walking positions
and ending with pushing positions. They then had
the content translated into Spanish and placed
note cards in every patient room informing staff
Staff stated that patients appreciated the
information, the calming music, seeing familiar
faces of staff from the unit, and that they felt
involved in their care. Patient support systems
said they felt they could assist their loved one
into the positions, or were able to provide relief of
pelvic pressure as labor progressed. Patients that
tested positive for COVID-19 also had access to
the same resources.
Following the release of this content, news spread
about this patient education resource. The head
of the UNC Hospitals Doula Program now utilizes
the channel as an educational opportunity for
those training to be doulas. The Perinatal Quality
Collaborative of North Carolina learned about it
and mentioned the channel in an article, as they
were working to reduce primary cesarean section
rates after noticing a spike during COVID-19.
Following this project, Kara was also nominated
for the UNC Hospitals Emerging Nurse Leader
Award and states she was " proud to have been
such an integral part of this educational initiative
and hopes that others can benefit from what we,
at UNC Hospitals, have accomplished. "
