Now the DAISY award has arrived at UNC Medical Center to provide national recognition to the wonderful nurses on our team. The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the parents of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). His parents were so moved by the nursing care Patrick received while hospitalized that they created the DAISY Foundation to honor his memory and recognize the enormous contributions and the thoughtful, compassionate care nurses provide when caring for patients. DAISY - which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System - was first piloted at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at the University of Washington Medical Center where Patrick received care. Soon after, other hospitals began to partner with the DAISY Foundation and the Award grew to become nationally known as an important tool in nursing retention and resilience.
