The pressures of the
pandemic weighed
especially heavy on nurses
who, during the height of
the pandemic, reported
high levels of burnout and
compassion fatigue.
Efforts to bring the DAISY Award to UNC Medical
Center began in the midst of the COVID-19
pandemic, when hospitals across the country were
struggling with high volumes of very sick patients.
The pressures of the pandemic weighed especially
heavy on nurses who, during the height of the
pandemic, reported high levels of burnout and
compassion fatigue.
Bringing DAISY to UNC Medical Center was an
opportunity to recognize the incredible contributions
of our nurses and to highlight the impact
compassionate care can have on our patients and
their families.
The DAISY kick-off event at UNC Medical Center
was held early in February of 2022. In just six weeks,
nearly 150 nominations were submitted recognizing
our nurses.
The DAISY nomination process asks patients,
families, physicians, and fellow nurses to tell their
story and share what makes their nominee so
extraordinary. Even those who ultimately do not
receive a reward receive a pin to denote their status
as a DAISY nominee. Nurses who are nominated
multiple times are eligible to receive special pins
that lets peers and patients know they are DAISY
nominated five times or more.

Each month, one winner is selected to receive
the DAISY award. Once selected, nurses are
surprised on their home unit with a celebration
that includes unit leaders, colleagues, nursing
executive leaders and in some cases the families
who nominated them.
Violet Trisolini, BSN, RN, Labor & Delivery; Richard
Scibilia BSN, RN, Dialysis; and Charles Harris,
BSN, RN, Medicine Intensive Care Unit, were our
first three winners. They each were nominated
by a patient or their family to honor these nurses
for providing excellent and compassionate care
under very trying circumstances.
We are looking forward to DAISY continuing to
be a wonderful way to celebrate our nurses and
highlight all that they do to make our patients
feel comforted and supported as we continue to
provide Carolina Care.
