responded by establishing an Inpatient Clinical Labor
Pool Team (ICLPT). The goal of the ICLPT was identifying
a pool of licensed and unlicensed staff with the potential
to serve in various capacities, if needed, across the
Medical Center, Wakebrook, and Hillsborough campuses.
Nurse leaders with expertise in project management,
staffing management, human resources, and professional
development and nursing practice were assembled to
monitor the ongoing staffing needs and to creatively and
innovatively meet the associated demands.
The ICLPT collaborated frequently with the larger
hospital-wide labor pool efforts to ensure
partnership and alignment with other areas, such as
outpatient and ancillary. The ICLPT created an online
tool so that volunteers from the community and university
could apply to assist as well as employees working in
non-clinical roles. The online tool helped the team identify
the type of previous clinical background, proximity of
clinical experience, current licensure, preferred shift, and
desired area of deployment. An email box was set up and
dedicated to the team's work as one point of contact
for questions.
The ICLPT developed a new inpatient 'Helping Hands'
role so that licensed staff without recent clinical bedside
experience could offset the workload of primary nurses
by completing tasks such as medication administration,
respiratory care and activities of daily living. The ICLPT
met daily to review applications and match team members
with inpatient units based on qualifications, role and skills.
Once matched, the staff member and unit manager were
introduced through a " you've been matched " email and
provided with an orientation plan and materials.
The " you've been matched by the inpatient clinical labor
pool team " emails became a hallmark of the team's
work and was a sign to the departments that much
needed help was on its way. The team ramped down
coverage in November 2021 as the burden of the Delta
surge lessened.
