A Year
in Review
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Since I first began my role as Chief Nursing Officer for
UNC Hospitals (UNCH) in January, I have been delighted
to speak with many of our wonderful nurses and caregiver
teams. Carolina Care is palpable, and your commitment to
our patients and each other has been apparent in every
interaction. I am very proud to be a part of this amazing team!
This past year has continued to be challenging for many.
While the clinical challenges of COVID have normalized, the
healthcare environment has changed. We are still enduring
staffing challenges across many areas. I am grateful to all
of you and to those in your lives who support you as we
continue to navigate our challenges and embrace new
opportunities. Through it all, each of you have demonstrated
incredible compassion and professionalism.

While COVID will forever be a chapter in our shared history,
we have been able to reset our focus. Together, we are
building our strategic vision for nursing at UNC Hospitals.
Your fantastic work is widely recognized. As of May, we have
cared for COVID patients for more than 15,000 patient days,
and we have 10 units who have earned Beacon Awards for
Quality. At Hillsborough Hospital, we opened Tower 2 and we
received Joint Commission Total Hip and Joint Accreditation.
While we have construction projects underway to update
patient care units at WakeBrook and Chapel Hill, we are also
moving along with our new Surgical Tower, set to open in
early 2024. Many of you have provided valuable feedback
on the design of our new space. In addition to our unit
and hospital awards, we also recognize the amazing care
